Springbok Nude Girls

The background of the documentary is set against the social environment of 1994/1995 when this alternative rock band originated in South Africa. South Africa had just become a democratic society. Suddenly we were free of sanctions and international isolation. The band originated in a conservative Afrikaans university town named Stellenbosch. The student population of Stellenbosch consisted of mainly Afrikaans speaking students raised in the Calvanistic church tradition of controlled behaviour, conservative values and narrow mindedness. Thus the Afrikaans youth of the day developed a quilt complex of always feeling that they overstep the boundaries if they challenged those norms in any way. Enter the Springbok Nude Girls, although Afrikaans speaking they sang in English, and incorporated
various styles into their music. They clearly transcended any boundaries their cultural background determined. Placing them in an international, cosmopolitan arena, which South African youth were starving for after years of creative sanctions and the subsequent lack of exposure to universal values. Free expression in a language not just a particular racial or cultural group could understand or relate to. The lyrics did not make sense in a post modernistic style. Listening to a song of Springbok Nude Girls was like going on an adventure or journey with unexpected turns taking the song into a completely different direction, one moment it is heavy metal, the next it changes into a jazz trumpet and ends in
a sweet soft melody! The documentary I aim to film is the story of this band with the strange name and their music in the specific time space they inhabited.
